Drone Use in Conservation
Work between Wildlife Drones, ACT Snake Removals and the Australian National University in Canberra has created a highly accessible system for tracking Eastern Brown snakes throughout suburban areas and designated nature reserve sites. Using drone technology provided by Wildlife Drones, the ANU team have been able to track the long-term movements of the Eastern Brown snake population. This was conducted by radio-telemetry GPS tracking, where the tracking device was harmlessly surgically inserted into the snakes. This technology can track 40 individuals simultaneously, compared to 12 hours it can take to locate a snake on foot using hand-held trackers.
